The thought process of an almost 3 year old.

We have a new garbage can in the kitchen-- the metal kind that you step on and the lid opens. All of Reagan's life, the garbage has been hidden under the kitchen sink, but in this house the sink is too deep and therefore the itty bitty little garbage can we've been trying to make work just isn't cutting it. Needless to say, the new "toy" in the kitchen has been the topic of many spirited discussions since we bought it on Monday night. So... last night Reagan decided to take a perfectly clean cup from her drawer in the kitchen and put it in the garbage can. I was in the kitchen when she did it and quickly rescued it from the nastiness that is a garbage can and started this following conversation....

Me: "Reagan... this is a good, clean cup. It is not garbage. Please do not put things like this in the garbage can."
Reagan: "Okay, Mommy"

Now... that was WAY too easy. So I decided to emphasize the point.

Me (holding the perfectly clean cup): "Reagan... tell me... is this cup garbage?"
Reagan: "Yes!"
Me: "No it isn't Reagan, this is a clean cup. Again... is this garbage?"
Reagan: "Yes! It is garbage, Mommy!"
Me: "No... it isn't. It is a clean cup! (at this point I'm wondering if she'll ever get it-- or if she totally gets it and is just pushing my buttons) Reagan... is THIS CUP garbage? (violently shaking my head no)
Reagan: "Yes! Mommy, it is just CLEAN garbage!!!"
(Sean quickly exits the room at this point laughing hysterically)

Okay, I give.
